Rain and sun are always trying to sneak up on you in a campervan. I tackled both with simple, budget-friendly IKEA solutions that are quick to set up and easy to use.

Rain Protection: A Giant Umbrella
In the rain, opening the sliding door let water onto the floor, my bed and the cooking cabinet. A retractable awning isn’t stealth-friendly, can be pricey and flaps in the wind. So I use a massive IKEA umbrella (around $7 or less on sale) in a golf cart umbrella holder that clamps on and folds down when not in use.
A car umbrella storage bag, attached with a magnet, catches the water from the wet umbrella.

Sun Protection: A Rectangular Umbrella
I skipped the retractable awning again: too bulky, too fussy, too expensive. A rectangular IKEA sun umbrella hugs the van and slides behind my front seats. I mounted a Vevor truck bed adjustable bar with a heavy-duty aluminum clamp to the crossbar under my solar panels, using aluminum brackets and stainless steel slot bolts. Shade takes three steps: extend the bar, grab the umbrella, unfold and clamp it.

One Umbrella, More Uses
A wide-opening outdoor umbrella clamp fits chunky campground tables, so the same umbrella shades my lunch. For the beach, I found a screw anchor for sand and soil that comes with an adapter that fits it. I’ll share test results next season.

The Teardrop Awning
My teardrop awning is big. It can shade a picnic table or the whole van, and it shines when I stay at one campsite for a while. I use it less now, partly because covering solar panels makes them useless. Last summer I also set it up for a hail forecast; the storm passed nearby.
