Curtains vs Blackout Shades

A Simple Upgrade That Made My Van Feel Like Home

Ever wake up in your van and feel like you’re inside a cave?

That’s exactly how it started feeling for me after using full blackout shades all the time.

Don’t get me wrong—WeatherTech shades are amazing for stealth camping. They give you full privacy and help with temperature.

But they’re not always the best option.

Why I Added Curtains

When I’m at a campsite, I don’t need full blackout. And constantly putting shades up and down gets old fast.

Switching to curtains made a big difference:

  • no daily setup
  • quick access to natural light
  • way more cozy, home-like feel

It just made the van nicer to live in.

The Setup I Used

I went with simple, lightweight curtains with adhesive rails—no drilling, no permanent changes.

For my Sienna:

  • 2 curtains per side window
  • 3 for the rear

That covered everything and instantly improved the space.

Why It Works So Well

  • super easy to install and remove
  • lightweight and safe
  • still works with WeatherTech blackout shades
  • clean look with good coverage
  • lets in soft light while keeping privacy

And most importantly—nothing blocks sliding doors or windows.

Final Thoughts

Blackout shades are still a must for stealth camping.

But for everyday van life? Curtains are a simple upgrade that makes your space feel warmer, brighter, and a lot more like home.

Sometimes it’s the small changes that make the biggest difference.
