I designed and built what might be the most versatile bed in any minivan camper build. It fits the compact space of my Toyota Sienna, comfortably sleeps two, offers storage underneath, and switches between bed, sofa and lounge modes. It even serves as an outdoor table.

Starting With the Mattress
I wanted a 6-foot bed, as wide as possible for two people, with a foam mattress at least 4″ thick. I built around a tri-fold 4″ mattress from Amazon. It would not fold into lounge mode, so I added 4″ inserts between the sections so the head and foot sections fold either way. I also trimmed the width from 52″ to 50″ so it doesn’t get stuck between the van walls.
Platform, Frame and Anchoring
The platform has three 24″ sections of 1/2″ plywood joined by lift-off hinges, with 1″ holes to ventilate under the mattress. Instead of a 2″x4″ frame, I built a plywood box that is thinner, more stable and doubles as enclosed storage. It comes apart with an Allen key in about five minutes. Its side walls compensate for the Sienna’s sloped floor, and aluminum angles with rollers guide the sections.
Everything in the van should be secured. The bed’s foundation is two pieces of lumber attached with U-bolts to the third-row seat lock strikers, joined by steel angles that the frame side walls bolt to.

Bed, Sofa and Lounge Modes
Bed: all sections flat, foot-section legs unfolded. Sofa: lift the middle section by its handles, slide the leg section to the seating position and fold the legs.

Lounge: open the security locks at the back, lift the head section and set its support legs, made from aluminum tripod extension poles, into their brackets.

Storage and a Hidden Outdoor Table
The frame walls form a storage box with two removable dividers, making three compartments. I lift the seating section and prop it with a magnetic latch. Because the sections disconnect, the head section also becomes an outdoor table on four telescopic legs that level on uneven ground.
